For the Marble Cake Batter:

  • 2 ½ cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 ½ tsp baking powder
  • ½ tsp salt
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 ¾ cups granulated sugar
  • 4 large eggs
  • 1 tbsp vanilla extract
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • ¼ cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 2 tbsp hot water

For the Chocolate or Vanilla Frosting (Optional):

  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 3 cups powdered sugar
  • 2 tbsp milk
  • 2 tsp vanilla extract (for vanilla frosting) or ¼ cup cocoa powder (for chocolate frosting)

  1. Preheat & Prepare Cake Pan:

    • Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).
    • Grease and flour a 9-inch round or bundt pan.
  2. Make the Cake Batter:

    • In a bowl, whisk flour, baking powder, and salt.
    • In a separate bowl, beat butter and sugar until fluffy.
    • Add eggs and vanilla extract, mixing well.
    • Gradually add dry ingredients and milk, mixing until smooth.
  3. Prepare the Chocolate Batter:

    • Remove 1 cup of the vanilla batter and place in a separate bowl.
    • Mix cocoa powder and hot water until smooth, then stir into the reserved batter.
  4. Create the Marble Swirl:

    • Pour half the vanilla batter into the cake pan.
    • Spoon dollops of chocolate batter over it, then add the remaining vanilla batter on top.
    • Use a knife or skewer to swirl the batters together gently for a marbled effect.
  5. Bake the Cake:

    • Bake for 35-40 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted comes out clean.
    • Let the cake cool in the pan for 10 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack.
  6. Frost (Optional) & Serve:

    • Make buttercream frosting by beating butter, powdered sugar, milk, and vanilla or cocoa powder.
    • Spread or drizzle over the cooled cake and serve!

  • For a richer flavor, substitute half of the milk with buttermilk.
