Ingredients
For the Danish:
- 1 sheet puff pastry (thawed)
- 8 oz cream cheese (softened)
- 1/4 cup granulated sugar
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1 egg yolk
- 1 egg (for egg wash)
For the Chocolate Topping:
- 1/2 cup chocolate chips
- 2 tablespoons heavy cream
- 1/4 cup mini chocolate chips (for topping)
Instructions
Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C). Roll out the puff pastry sheet on a lightly floured surface and cut it into 6–9 equal squares depending on your preferred size. Place them on a parchment-lined baking sheet, leaving space between each piece.
Using a knife, lightly score a smaller square inside each pastry, about 1/2 inch from the edge, without cutting all the way through. This helps create a border that will puff up while baking. Gently press the center area down slightly with a fork.
In a bowl, mix the softened cream cheese, sugar, vanilla extract, and egg yolk until smooth and creamy. The mixture should be thick but spreadable with no lumps.
Spoon the cream cheese mixture into the center of each pastry square, spreading it evenly within the scored border. Avoid overfilling to prevent spilling during baking.
Beat the whole egg and brush it lightly over the edges of the puff pastry. This gives the Danish a beautiful golden, glossy finish when baked.
Bake in the preheated oven for 15–18 minutes or until the pastry is puffed and golden brown. Remove from the oven and let them cool slightly before adding the topping.
In a microwave-safe bowl, melt the chocolate chips with heavy cream in short intervals, stirring until smooth. Drizzle the melted chocolate over each Danish and sprinkle mini chocolate chips on top.
Notes
- Keep puff pastry cold for best results
- Don’t overfill the center to avoid overflow
- Score lightly, not all the way through
- Let Danish cool slightly before adding chocolate
- Use good-quality chocolate for better flavor
