This dish is perfect for family dinners, gatherings, or when you want a homemade meal that feels both cozy and elevated.
Ingredients
For the Mac and Cheese:
- 12 oz elbow macaroni
- 3 tablespoons butter
- 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour
- 2 cups milk
- 1 cup heavy cream
- 2 cups shredded cheddar cheese
- 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
- ½ cup grated Parmesan cheese
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- ½ teaspoon salt
- ½ teaspoon black pepper
For the Sourdough Breadcrumb Topping:
- 1½ cups sourdough bread, torn or pulsed into crumbs
- 2 tablespoons melted butter
- ¼ cup grated Parmesan cheese
- ½ teaspoon dried thyme (optional)
Instructions
Cook macaroni according to package instructions until al dente. Drain and set aside.
In a large saucepan, melt butter over medium heat. Add flour and whisk for 1–2 minutes to form a roux. Slowly pour in milk and cream while whisking continuously until smooth and thickened.
Reduce heat and stir in cheddar, mozzarella, and Parmesan cheese. Mix until melted and creamy. Season with garlic powder, salt, and pepper.
Add cooked macaroni to the cheese sauce and stir until evenly coated.
In a bowl, mix sourdough crumbs with melted butter, Parmesan cheese, and thyme.
Transfer mac and cheese into a baking dish. Spread evenly and top with sourdough breadcrumb mixture.
Bake at 375°F (190°C) for 20–25 minutes or until the topping is golden and crispy.
Let it cool slightly before serving so the sauce thickens and holds together.
Notes
- The key to a smooth cheese sauce is adding the milk slowly and whisking continuously to prevent lumps.
- Using freshly shredded cheese instead of pre-shredded helps create a creamier texture since it melts more evenly.
- The sourdough breadcrumbs should be slightly coarse to give a better crunch when baked.
- Baking the dish allows the flavors to combine and creates that golden crust on top, which adds both texture and visual appeal.
- Letting the dish rest for a few minutes after baking helps the sauce settle and makes serving easier.
